Product Integrity

Food ingredients and agricultural materials can be sensitive to particle impact, bruising, breakage, dust generation or contamination. A wheat kernel, sugar crystal and powdered ingredient impose different requirements. Start by defining allowable change in product quality and the measurement method, rather than choosing an elbow on appearance alone.

Material-Contact and Cleaning Requirements

Food-contact suitability depends on the entire assembled system: metal grade, internal surface, liner, retention materials, seals, weld finish and the cleaning process. Stainless steel may be appropriate, but a grade designation alone does not certify compliance with any food-contact standard or hygienic design requirement.

Geometry and Residual Product

Pocket designs use intentional material accumulation in some duties, which may conflict with allergen or batch-changeover requirements. Sweeps and segmented bends have their own potential retention locations at joints, changes in bore and connections. Identify the areas that can be inspected or cleaned.

Compatible Material Options

AISI 304 and AISI 316 pipe materials and approved stainless castings can be evaluated for the actual ingredient and cleaning chemistry. Any liner, hardfacing or adhesive requires separate contact-material and contamination review; the presence of a hard surface is not proof of hygienic suitability.

Validate Cleaning and Product Quality

Define the incoming and outgoing product quality, cleaning method, acceptable residue and validation samples. Consider physical access, whether the elbow can be removed, and whether wet cleaning is compatible with all internal parts.
