Segmented and Mitered Pneumatic Conveying Pipe Elbows

Review the complete segmented pipe elbows content below. All specifications and product claims remain subject to approval before publication.

Construction from Pipe Segments

A segmented or mitered elbow changes direction using multiple pieces of straight pipe, cut and joined at planned angles. This construction offers an alternative when a continuously bent pipe is difficult to manufacture at the selected diameter, radius or wall thickness. The number and length of segments must be designed for the required envelope and conveying duty.

Unlike a continuous sweep, segmented construction introduces changes in wall direction at each joint. These can affect where particles strike, local wear and pressure loss. It is not automatically equivalent to a smoothly bent pipe of the same nominal radius.

Sizes DN50–DN400

The proposed size program covers DN50–DN400. The actual incoming pipe OD, wall thickness, joint preparation and any weld reinforcement are specified in the manufacturing drawing. Do not infer that every size uses the same segment count.

Available 30°, 45° and 90° Deflections

The required total change in direction may be distributed over different numbers of segments. Engineering will determine the number and angular increment, with attention to internal steps, fabrication access and final fit.

Candidate common catalog for the five pipe-based families. Manufacturing and lining feasibility not yet approved. All dimensions in millimetres.

These radii are nominal geometric targets, not proof that a faceted centerline follows a perfect arc. The manufacturing drawing must identify segment lengths, miter angles, joint positions and true end-to-end envelope. Segmented solutions may not be feasible at every proposed short radius.

Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel Grades

Planned materials are carbon steel, AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steel. The welding procedure, consumables, passivation needs and inspections must be compatible with the selected grade and the conveying material.

Welded Pipe Ends and DIN/ANSI Flanges

Straight ends may be prepared for welding or an agreed site connection method. Flanged configurations can follow applicable EN/DIN or ANSI/ASME patterns. Specify both ends independently if the piping systems differ.

Segment Count and Internal Transitions

A larger number of smaller turns may create a smoother approximation of an arc, at the cost of more cutting and welding. Fewer segments can be economical, but sharper internal direction changes may increase localized impact. The best count must be justified by design and operating duty.

Availability, actual finished bore, wall thickness, pressure/temperature limits, flange drilling, mass and accepted manufacturing combinations are confirmed on an approved quotation and drawing.

Technical release includes material grades, weld requirements, dimensional tolerances, final bore and any required inspections. Engineering connections.

Application Considerations

Evaluate segmented bends for installation envelope, abrasion, pressure demand and cleaning. If the process handles fragile material or has severe particle impact, compare a sweep or alternative wear system rather than choosing solely on purchase cost.
