Abrasion-Resistant Bends for Sand and Minerals

Review the complete sand & minerals content below. All specifications and product claims remain subject to approval before publication.

Abrasive Materials and Particle Size

Sand and mineral products vary in hardness, angularity, particle size and moisture. A fine powder can generate widespread sliding abrasion, while larger angular particles can produce concentrated impacts at a bend and its outlet. Any recommendation needs to reflect the actual mineral grade rather than a generic description such as “abrasive material.”

Wear Zones in Sweeps and Pockets

A continuous sweep tends to expose an outer-wall region to impact and sliding along the turn. A pocket elbow intentionally changes how the stream approaches the impact surface and may retain a material layer in suitable duty. Both must be evaluated for wear and downstream effects. For segmented bends, miter joints also warrant attention.

Metal, Ceramic and Basalt Options

Ceramic and Basalt Protection

Hard liners offer a candidate wear surface, but foreign objects, high-energy impacts, liner joints and thermal cycles may govern service performance. The casing should not be evaluated without its liner attachment and finished bore.

Hardfaced Steel

Tungsten-carbide-containing overlay may provide localized abrasion resistance where application and qualified process permit it. Coverage must follow expected wear location and leave acceptable internal transitions.

Pocket Elbows

For a free-flowing dry material, the product-cushion mechanism can be evaluated against a conventional bend. Cleaning behavior, outlet wear, and pressure demand are essential comparison factors.

Operating Data Required

Please identify the mineral, particle size distribution, bulk density, approximate moisture, average and peak throughput, conveying pressure/vacuum, line velocity or gas flow, bend size, bend orientation and present failure mode. Include photos of the outlet pipe if the current elbow has failed repeatedly.
